On June 10, 2026, the federal Liberal government introduced Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act, which aims to ban children under the age of 16 from social media platforms, regulate social media, and impose controls on artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots.

The government's proposed new law will also establish a new independent Canadian Internet regulator which will be styled as the Digital Safety Commission of Canada.

We all agree that protecting children from online predators and harmful content is incredibly important.

However, this new legislation – as currently drafted – proposes to give the federal government extraordinary new powers over what everyday Canadians can see, do, or say online.
