During last year's election, Prime Minister Carney said that Canadians would judge his government on prices at the grocery store.
But one year later, the verdict is in: In Canada, food prices have risen at double the rate as compared to our G7 peers.
Prices for once-affordable staples have surged even higher: Potatoes are up 16%, pork shoulder has increased by 14% and beef is up 33% in just the past 12 months.
Analysts calculate that the average Canadian family will spend at least $995 more on groceries in 2026 over 2025.
Reasons for this inflation include the ever-increasing hidden federal taxes on your food, such as higher taxes on the fuel and fertilizer that Canadian farmers use to grow crops and raise animals.
When farmers and food producers are taxed more, we get hammered at the checkout.
Rhonda and the Conservatives have proposed real solutions to this crisis and are calling on the Carney government to lower food prices by immediately slashing:
- The industrial carbon tax on fertilizer and farm equipment;
- The food packaging tax on plastics; and,
- The fuel standard tax on gasoline and diesel.
Oshawa households deserve nutritious and affordable food on their tables.

Our Petition

Whereas The federal Liberal government's industrial carbon tax on fertilizer and farm equipment has made producing food more expensive;
Whereas The Liberal plastics ban has made packaging Canadian food more expensive and causes food to spoil faster, leading to higher grocery prices and more food waste; and,
Whereas The 'other' hidden carbon tax, namely the Liberals' Clean Fuel Standard tax on gas and diesel, has made food transportation more expensive,
We, the undersigned, call upon the Carney government to cut the hidden taxes on food and deliver affordable groceries to Canadian families.
