Mexico is a popular travel destination for many Oshawa constituents.

In light of deteriorating public safety and criminal-led violence in Mexico in recent days, we're providing an update to Oshawa constituents who may be travelling in Mexico, have loved ones in the country, or have plans to visit soon.

Canadians in or near Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara -- along with several other areas -- are asked to shelter in place, maintain a low profile, monitor local media and follow advice of local authorities, including all shelter-in-place orders.

Registration of Canadians in Mexico

Any Canadian in Mexico should register as a Canadian Abroad at: https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/registration.

This free service allows the Government of Canada to notify you in case of an emergency at your destination or a personal emergency at home. You'll also receive important information before or during natural disasters or civil unrest.

Canadians in need of emergency consular assistance should contact the Embassy of Canada to Mexico in Mexico City at +52 55-5724-7900 or by email at [email protected].

Escalating Violence Across Mexico

Global Affairs Canada warns that serious violence continues to escalate in Jalisco state as criminal groups have set up roadblocks with burning vehicles in several cities. There have been shootouts with Mexican security forces and explosions.

For more information, Canadians may contact Global Affairs Canada's Emergency Watch and Response Centre (EWRC) in Ottawa, available 24/7, at: 1 613-996-8885 or:

• via text 1 613-686-3658

• via WhatsApp: 1 613-909-8881

• via Signal at: 1 613-909-8087

• or by e-mail: [email protected].

Flight Cancellations

Air Canada and WestJet (including Sunwing) have cancelled flights to and from Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Manzanillo.

Many U.S. carriers, including United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, have also announced cancellations.

The situation across Mexico is very serious.

Please share this advice with any affected friends or loved ones.

And be sure to keep up to date with the Government of Canada's latest travel advisories for the region at: https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/mexico.
